The Hammerhead shark

Making of Hydra.

In this video I try a new woodcarving technique to create a blank for a Hammerhead shark sculpture. This was done by cutting slices with a CO2 laser cutter.

I named him Hydra because (spoiler alert) I had to cut his head off. I was unhappy with the result and my whole body needed to fix it. You can see this in the making of video.

The spotted eagle ray

Making of AQUILA.

This video shows the making of a spotted eagle ray out of walnut with 660 basswood inlays.
I have named her “Aquila” which means eagle in latin. It is the name of a constellation, so I thought it would suit her very well.

Aquila is a constellation on the celestial equator. Its name is Latin for ‘eagle’ and it represents the bird that carried Zeus/Jupiter’s thunderbolts in Greek-Roman mythology.

Sculpted out of walnut, it is composed of more than 600 basswood inlays.

The mechanical whale

This kinetic sculpture is named after the albino humpback whale often seen on the coasts of Australia. Migaloo is an Aboriginal word meaning “white boy”.

The whale and the waves are made of basswood, the frame is walnut and the base is acacia.

This piece is based on a concept by “The Lost Gypsy“.

Making of a mechanical whale.

This video shows the making of a mechanical moving whale in wood (also called automaton).

It takes around 50 hours for me to finish one Wooden Migaloo. To make this video show multiple angles, I had to film myself crafting four of these sculptures.
I had more than 15 hours of rushes to sort and edit. I hope you’ll enjoy watching it.

The mechanical dusky

Named after the town of New Zealand where I first encountered dusky dolphins. This Maori name means “to eat crayfish”.

This sculpture was the prize of a raffle. All proceeds were donated to Sea Shepherd to help them protect our oceans.

A galaxy under the sea

In the astronomical traditions of Torres Strait Islanders, Baidam is a shark. The shark constellation consists of seven stars. The stars of Baidam were used for navigation and provided knowledge about the seasons.
